Full leather, double gilt border to covers, five raised bands with gilt decorations. Shows rubbing to extremities esp. to head of spine, less so to the edges and surface of the boards, also spine, with leather spine labels detached, leaving blind-stamping which is readable. All edges marbled, top edge darkened, the others bright; this marbled design is identical to the end papers. Well bound, both covers firmly attached. Title page and frontispiece illustration of Shakespeare show very light foxing, the balance of the book has minor foxing, paper is bright. This volume consists of: Preface, Sketch of the Life of Shakespeare, Mr. Pope's Preface, Dr. Johnson's Preface, An Historical Account of the English Stage by Mr. Malone, Glossary, The Tempist, Two Gentleman of Vermona, Merry Wives of Windsor.This edition "Accurately Printed form the Text to the Corrected Copies left by the Late George Steevens and Edmond Malone, with Mr. Malone's Various Readings." Plus "A selection of Explanatory and Historical Notes from the Most eminent Commentators; A History of the State, and a Life of Shakspeare" by Alexander Chalmers. xlviii, 182, 286 pages.
