About this Item

[RUSSIAN POETRY: WOMEN]. [AKHMATOVA, Anna]. PODOROZHNIK [Title in Russian]. [PLANTAIN]. [Poems] by Ahha Axmatoba [Anna Andreyevna Akhmatova]. [text entirely in Russian Cyrillic script; Kilgour 7]. 32mo, rebound (with original wrappers) in early decorated paper-covered boards, linen spine, paper cover label (with author and title in contemporary neat ink holograph), marbled endpapers; original pictorial wrappers bound-in (designed by Mstislav Dobuzhinskii), 61 pages, illustrated (with a frontispiece by Dobuzhinskii). Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966) is the literary pseudonym of Russian poet, Anna Andreyvna Gorenko [she took Akhmatova from her Tatar grandmother]. She was born in 1889, near Odessa, Ukraine, began writing poetry at the age of 11, and published her first book of poems, 'Evening,' in 1912, to popular and critical success. Beginning in the early 1920s, publication of her work, with a few exceptions, was banned by the Soviet regime. She died in 1966, in Domodedovo. "Podorozhnik[Plantain]" is a collection of 38 poems, written between 1917 and 1919. Original pictorial wrappers have early soiling, front wrapper has nick at tip of one corner, small chip at lower fore-corner (with early archival mend, with matching paper), else a very good copy, with the text fresh and clean; rebound in contemporary decorative paper-covered boards, with linen spine (binding is fresh and bright).
