First MacMillan edition bound in olive green cloth with gilt lettering to spines. Each volume has significant foxing to pastedowns and first few pages, light wear to corners and dusty top-edges. Each also has a steel-engraved frontispiece of Milton at various ages. Volume one has been inscribed and signed by Masson in the year of publication to Hannah Rothschild, Countess of Rosebery. The countess was wife to Archibald Philip Primrose (member of the House of Lords, British statesman and 5th Earl of Rosebery).
