About this Item

This is the May, 1938 issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine. These old (74 years) magazines are so full of nifty stuff, that a proper description would take several pages. The cover story - giving rise to the colorful balloon on the front cover is about experimental use of photography from a tethered balloon to discover the cause of traffic jams. There is a nice article about the San Francisco international exposition which was to open in 1939. Also: "How Flying Clippers Dodge Storms;" "Tornadoes Are His Hobby;" "Putting the Atom to Work;" "Life Saving Inventions;" Part III of "Across Africa on One Lung [riding a motorcycle across Africa];" "Tricks of the Animated Film Makers." And many others. The table of contents runs a full column in very small print. There is always an emphasis on inventions and gadgetry, some of it pretty hilarious. There are also some worthwhile shop projects. 160 jam-packed pages of articles etc. + 160pp of very nifty ads. 9 3/8" X 6 3/4" in colorful paper covers. A bit dulled from age, but still nice.
