Description:

xvi, 142 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14.75cm. Original green cloth soiled with some mottling mostly occurring at edges; gilt lettering on front board and spine remains bright, board corners bumped with slight wear. Red speckled edges. Toning, foxing, and some staining to initial and rear leaves; adjoining front free endpaper and half-title have small chipping at their lower gutters; stub present between pages xiv-xv but all plates collate as present per illustration list on page vii; foxing and some toning to interior pages. Binding is firm. A good+ copy. An overly exuberant clerk or proprietor applied purple ink store/bookseller stamp "Borroums' Drug Store | Opp. Court House, | Corinth, Miss." a total of eight times - on fp, ffep, frontis recto, plate recto opposite page 4, page 41 top margin, plate recto opposite page 74, plate recto opposite page 108, and on rear pastedown; stamps have varying impression strength (i.e. some lighter, some darker) as well as several having associated smudging occurring to adjacent pages. Early twentieth century tickets or stamps for Mississippi booksellers are unusual. Borroum’s Drug Store was founded in 1865 by Confederate Army surgeon Dr. Andrew Jackson Borroum (aka Jack, 1842-1897) with its first location on Front Street (now known as Cruse Street) but moving to 604 Waldron Street opposite the Alcorn County Courthouse circa 1918 upon the latter's construction. Borroum’s continued on after its founder passed being operated by Dr. Jack's eldest son Dr. James Alexis Borroum (aka Lex, 1871-1932) who, at the store's rear, maintained an aviary breeding and raising canaries and thus the connection to a bird-keeping reference.
