About this Item

Oblong 16mo. (14 cm.) 109p. Illustrated with 4 folding maps in color which correspond to the four sections of this little book: Theatres, Restaurants, Artistic Paris, and Shops. Key to Phonetic Pronunciation and Tables of French Equivalents. Pictorial paper over boards with a blue cloth spine. Front cover has a vignette in color of an Red Cross woman offering this book to an American Dough Boy with the Red Cross in the foreground and the American flag in the background. Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, paper very lightly soiled, maps in fine condition and appear to be unopened, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. According to the Preface, "This book has been compiled for the purpose of rendering practical assistance to officers and men of the A.E.F. [American Expeditionary Force] who are passing through Paris and wish to see and do the utmost in a limited number of days. To attain this aim four plans, with accompanying explanatory notes, offer respectively a good choice of restaurants, shops, theaters and moving picture shows, and a brief summary of the main points of interest in 'Artistic Paris.' It is hoped that these hints may respond to the wishes of our soldier friends and help them enjoy their stay in this unique City." Items located in the four sections are keyed by number to the appropriate map. W. Thallon Daus was a Captain in the American Red Cross. It is not certain, but W. Thallon Daus may have been William Thallon Daus, the son of R. L. Daus and and Augustine Louise Perrin, apparently a French woman whom R.L. Daus married in Paris. R.L. Daus had studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and subsequently carried on his architecture practice in New York City., where he designed several prominent landmarks. [information from Who's Who in New City and State] This is an absolutely charming piece of World War I memorabilia which is still useful today!. Bookseller Inventory # 008021
