About this Item

This is a very good first edition with a very good dust jacket. The jacket does have very minor stain to the back, left, bottom. Book is a very good tight, clean, bright copy bound in blue boards with gold titles and trim. The purpose of this book is to show how George Washington appeared to men of his own day and since. The sixteen portraits by many hands show how differently he looked to the trained artists for whom he posed. The quotations, over 1500, give estimates (often contradictory) of the man in his various spheres of action. These are from the hands of some 400 critics, contemporary and modern, and are so classified as to give a better understanding of one of the most loved and at the same time most maligned characters in American history. It is something new in Washingtoniana: both a fascinating year-book and a valuable reference work. Bookseller Inventory # 000254
