Burroughs, Edgar Rice. A PRINCESS OF MARS. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., (1917). First Edition. Frontispiece and four interior plates by Frank A. Schoonover. A FINE copy, virtually unrubbed, in original publisher's deep brown cloth lettered in reddish-orange. Lacking the original dust jacket, but this is as nice a copy as one could hope for otherwise. INSCRIBED at length by Burroughs's grandson Danton to a collector (bookplate on front endpaper) in 1989 wherein he makes specific reference to the beauty of this particular copy. A PRINCESS OF MARS was the first novel written by the author, appearing in serial form in 1912. In 1917 it was published in book form for the first time in an edition of roughly 10,000 copies, few of which survive in this kind of condition. First title in Burroughs's "Barsoom" series, and one of the seminal and archetypal works of early science fiction fantasy. Bookseller Inventory #
