About this Item

12 volumes, each measuring approximately 9" x 6" (22.86cm. x 15.24cm). Dark blue cloth over boards, with gilt design of ship atop globe to front boards, with words "Auxilio Divino" beneath a rippled banner. Gilt lettering to spines, simply stating "Hakluyt's Voyages" and volume number, with gilt seashell design below that, and MACLEHOSE at bottom of spines. Top edges gilt, with untrimmed foredges and tails. Light shelf-rubbing to extremities with occasional minor nudging to corners, and faint offsetting to endpapers. Text blocks clean with no evident spotting or foxing. All volumes solidly bound. Not a showcase set, but a clean, sturdy, affordable set of this classic which can be freely used without pampering by the curious reader or working scholar alike. This classic travel and exploration account ("The Principall Navigations, Voyages and Discoveries of the English nation, made by Sea or our Land, to the most remote and farthest distant Quarters of the earth at any time within the compass of these 1500 yeeres") was first published in 1589 by George Bishop and Ralph Newberie, with a second edition in 1598, with reprinting in 1599, and 1600. The text of this particular edition is an exact reprint of the aforementioned editions of 1598-1600 with exception of modernizing (to 1903) forms of letters, as well as the insertion of references to volumes/pages of the original text, in the margins, to aid serious scholars. "All maps, plans and charts are reproduced in exact facsimile, with the view of illustrating the state of cartography in Hakluyt's time." (Publishers Note). Bookseller Inventory # 72397
