About this Item

19cm.; (4), 479, (7), 143, (1) pp. The Heidelbergh Catechism has separate paging and special title page. Evans 10561: "This is the first book of music printed from type in America. The type for the musical notes was obtained from Amsterdam." Sabin 66448: "2000 copies of the book were printed, but it is now very rare." Church 1067: "This is the First Edition, in English, of the Prayer-Book of the Reformed Dutch Church of New York. It is a translation of the old Holland liturgy. The translation of the book from the Dutch was made by the Rev. John Livingston, D.D. The psalms were rendered into English verse by Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. There are one hundred and fifty psalms in metre, accompanied on every page by the printed music. The type for the music notes was ordered from Daniel Crommelin, of Amsterdam, in 1764." Brinley 6354: "Scarce." Still a good solid copy of an important book, containing the first music printed from type in America. Contemporary calf (rubbed, chipped at spine ends), corners bumped. (#6165). With an 18th-century ownership signature and signed manuscript poem by Peter Mabye; the Mabye family of Bergen County, New Jersey, and Orange (later Rockland) County, New York, including Peter (1717-1797), his son John Peter (1742-1836), and grandson Peter, were members of the Reformed Dutch Church in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Scarce in trade, with three copies appearing at auction in the past 35 years (ABPC, 1976-2011), the last copy bringing $4,800 in 2007. Bookseller Inventory # 57690
