August 1580 in Vicenza) war der bedeutendste Architekt der Renaissance in Oberitalien. Er war der erste große Berufsarchitekt", der nur als Architekt tätig war, ohne sich auf einem anderen Gebiet der Kunst hervorzutun. Seine Vorbilder waren die römische Antike und die großen Architekten der italienischen Renaissance, vor allem Bramante, Michelangelo, Sanmicheli und Sansovino. Als Ergebnis wird die einzigartige Harmonie und Eleganz seiner Bauten hervorgehoben.
