A history and analysis of the population of Rhode Island, from mid-17th century, just after its founding by Roger Williams (1636) to the time of this publication (1858Ð9), using tax levies, the periodic census, starting in 1708 up to that of 1850. The analysis examines the effects of immigration, the effects of war, urbanization, and changes in the racial composition including the shrinkage of the black population and the disappearance by 1858 of pure-blood Native Americans. the data provided are extremely interesting and useful demographics. This report is part of the Sixth Registration Report of RI. C. W. Parsons, M.D.(1823Ðafter 1882), was the son of Usher Parsons, the illustrious naval physician and historian of the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812, a memoir of whom was published by his son, a professor at Brown and an active member of the Rhode Island Historical Society.
