Description:

Quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. FIRST EDITION. The Japanese doll does not come from Japan but is imagined by an American girl, "Sick-a-bed Betty," and then made for her from cloth and "olive and black paints" by her parents. Purchasers of the book could make Pansy Eyes for themselves, using printed linen sheets bound in the front of the book, to be cut out, sewn together, and stuffed. Original pages with the doll at front well preserved. Some light wear at extremities and rubbing to boards. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co. [The Reilly and Lee Company], 1922., 1922. Poor condition. Collation as [front pastedown], [missing pages 1-2], 3-44, [rear flyleaf], [rear flyleaf], [rear free endpaper], [rear pastedown]. Hardcover: H 27.75cm x L 22.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black cloth spine chipped and frayed at ends, near 12cm long tear to cloth ascending from heel. Black paper crisscrossed with white and gold diagonal lines over boards; center color pictorial illustration to front board but marred by patches of surface peeling, board edges worn particularly at corners. Child's faded ink signature on front pastedown with pencil ownership inscription at top margin of half-title page (i.e. page 3). Lacking pages 1-2 and perhaps a front free endpaper and/or flyleaf. Front hinge slightly shaken; obtrusive splitting to rear hinge. Jagged but closed 8.5cm tear ascending from bottom of title/copyright leaf (i.e. pages 5-6). Other soiling and scattered light staining to interior pages; toning to rear blank leaves as well as pencil writing on rear endpapers. Rear board blurb calls for two sheets of linen from which a doll can be constructed - however those sheets are lacking. Blurb also cites PANSY EYES as No. 1 in the Travel Tot Tales Series with No. 2. as GRETCHEN OF HOLLAND; citation for latter may indicate that this book is an early reprint. Poor condition and sold as is with all faults. Page decorations and b/w illustrations throughout. Bookseller Inventory # JUN17-06150
