About the Author: Dr Catherine Whistler is a curator in the Department of Western Art, Ashmolean Museum. She is responsible for the collections of Italian and Spanish paintings and drawings and the textile collection, and her curatorial duties include work on exhibitions, gallery displays and the planning of paintings conservation. Apart from the Ashmolean's collections, her research interests lie in 18th century Italy and Spain.
