About this title:

Synopsis: For a full list of entries and contributors, a generous selection of sample entries, and more, visit the Papacy: An Encyclopedia website.

Routledge is pleased to publish this acclaimed resource in a revised, expanded, and updated English language edition, translated by a team of experts in papal history.
This comprehensive three-volume reference not only covers all of the popes (and anti-popes) from St. Peter to John Paul II, but also explores the papacy as an institution. Articles cover the inner workings--both contemporary and historical--of the Holy See, and encompass religious orders, papal encyclicals, historical events, papal controversies, the arts, and more. This set is destined to be the standard English-language reference for all issues concerning the papacy. Also inlcludes five maps.

From Booklist: This new encyclopedia is in large part a direct translation of the French work Dictionnaire historique de la papaute (Librairie Artheme Fayard, 1994). However, events that have occurred since the publication of the French edition have been included here, developments in the pontificate of John Paul II being a good example. Bibliographies have also been updated to include recent and English-language sources.

In addition to biographical articles on popes and antipopes, the alphabetically arranged entries offer historical information on a wide variety of topics. Some describe attributes of the pope, such as his teaching authority (Magisterium) and when that magisterium is infallible (Infallibility). Others treat institutions associated with the papacy (Curia, Synod of Bishops). The papacy vis-a-vis important historical events (French Revolution, Reformation, World War II) is described. Intellectual movements such as Renaissance humanism and Marxism and the papacy's engagement with them are discussed. The papacy has been important to the history of Western art and architecture, and this importance is reflected in articles on Museums, Vatican; Painting; Patronage, papal; and specific churches. There is a substantial survey on Judaism, offering a look at the treatment of Jews and the views of Judaism held by the papacy. Historical throughout, this encyclopedia is nevertheless contemporary, with entries for Modernism, Modernity, and even the Cinema, popes and. The set concludes with a very substantial index.

There are several smaller, less comprehensive treatments of the papacy, including Dictionary of Popes and the Papacy [RBB Mr 15 02] and The Pope Encyclopedia: An A to Z of the Holy See (Crown, 1995). Although a three-volume encyclopedia may seem a large undertaking for such a specialized topic, the papacy is not just an important religious institution of interest in Western Europe. Rather, the Holy See is an extremely important player on the world's religious, political, and diplomatic stage. The detailed and substantial treatment of the subject matter, along with the scholarly approach taken, make this reference title appropriate for academic and large public library collections. Researchers in religion, art, and history will find much of use here. RBB
