About this Item

1st edition (not stated); inscribed by the author on the 2nd front free endpaper "To Ray Silverstein with very best wishes. Peter Strevens. February 28, 1980"; from Silverstein's library with his stamp on the front free endpaper and bookseller's pencilled price notation, edges show some darkening, otherwise tight, clean, and little read, overall rating Near Fine; would make a good addition to a collection of authographed books by Strevens, or, more widely, books dealing with the acquisition of English as a second and foreign language, and with English language pedagogy, especially as seen through the eyes of researchers in Great Britain in mid-century; trade paper covers are cream colored with black lettering on the front, spine, and back, the title of the book repeated in four small brown and white boxes of abstract design; large 12mo - 7 5/8 inches high, viii + 152 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
