About this Item

39x27cm, 85pp (plus unpaginated leaves with tipped-in paper specimens). With forty specimens of different papers tipped-in to black paper leaves, two further small tipped-in leaves, and one photographic plate. Copy xxvii of lxv (300), half-bound in light turquoise leather over light green paper-covered boards with a blind-embossed stamp to the front board, silver title to the spine, with a separate slightly larger portfolio containing 25 whole sheets of the papers, quarter-bound in green buckram over dark green paper-covered boards, all in a green buckram-covered solander box (with filler inserts to accommodate the book) with a turquoise leather spine panel bearing a silver title. One of Whittington's most monumental productions - a scholarly survey by John Bidwell (Curator of Graphic Arts at Princeton University) of British and Continental handmade and mouldmade papers used by the Oxford University Press, accompanied by a generous provision of actual samples in both the book and (in this special edition) as complete sheets in the separate portfolio. The book's inspiration was the acquisition by the Whittington Press of about 20,000 sheets of fine vintage paper from the Oxford University Press in 1986, as letterpress printing was being phased out (the OUP subsequently closed its printing operations altogether in 1996). Since then, Whittington has used its OUP stock, where sufficient, in several fine books. However, this book is the only opportunity to date for the fine printing enthusiast to examine and handle such a broad range of papers in one place, including the scarcer items - and in such a generous sample size. The scarce original prospectus, which itself has a tipped-in sample, is included with the book, together with a card from Rose Randle apologising for having to fold it. Fine, with a Fine portfolio, in a Very Good (light wear and small bumps to the cloth on the edges and corners) solander box, and a Very Good (fold across the centreline) Prospectus. This is an exceptionally large and heavy book (6kg) and standard shipping rates do not apply - please contact us to discuss shipping options including the possibility of personal collection/delivery in the UK.
