Small 8vo. 11 cm. 8vo. [viii], 424 pp. Collation: [*]?, A-2C?, 2D? Engraved title, head and tail pieces; occasional mini manuscript verse numbers along some margins, title verso reinforced with Kozo at gutter. Original beige/brown marbled paper over paper boards with plain paper manuscript spine label, all edges red; covers rubbed, neat Kozo paper repair to rear joint, rear free endpaper. Bookplate of Hartford Seminary Foundation. Title with the ink initials of âC. S.â Very good. Rare. Collection of the poetic writings by the Roman poet Statius, who was highly regarded in his time and through the Middle Ages. The work is edited and annotated by Johann Friedrich Gronovius, known as a German classical scholar, but whose position was âdominantâ and perhaps due to the declining interest of Statius the work went unchallenged for about two hundred years. Berlincourt calls the work âpondus non magnumâ whereas Willems calls it âà dition mà diocreâ. âA favorite of Emperor Domitian, he won the poetry prize at an annual festival under Domitianâs auspices⦠His surviving works include two epics in the manner of Vergilâ"the Thebaid, on the Seven against Thebes, and the Achilleid (incomplete), on the early life of Achillesâ"and the Silvae, a collection of poems, some displaying careful craftsmanship, others apparently hastily composed improvisations.â The engraved title shows a battle scene from the Thebaid, the city of Thebes is in the background, the poet and a horse profile in the foreground, above hoovers an angel holding a scroll with the titleâs words.
