About this Item

Tall 4to. (10 x 12 in.). vi, 319, [1] pp. Woodcut-engraved frontisp., 49 engraved plates by Gustave Dore. Original green illustrated. publisher's cloth, elaborately decorated and illustrated in gilt & black on front cover & spine, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. (minor edgewear, rubbing, some wear & minor bumping to corners, spine expertly recased, occasional light foxing, toning), still a VG- copy. First Altemus edition of the classic epic poem with the spectacular Dore engravings. Gustave Dore wins the honors for the largest set of published illustrations for Paradise Lost . . . fifty powerful images which have been so frequently reprinted and reproduced that, to many of us, Dore's brooding landscapes, his opacous Globe, his agonized, soliloquizing Satan sum up the Milton of our earliest and most vivid acquaintance.
