About this title

Synopsis:

In 1796, William Hayley named John Milton the “greatest English author,” high praise considering Milton (1608-1674) lived during the Age of Shakespeare. Regardless of whether Milton is truly the greatest English author, few question his legacy as one of the greatest writers of the English language and one of the most important philosophers of modern Europe. Living during a tumultuous period that saw the English Civil War and the rise of Oliver Cromwell, Milton witnessed firsthand the political and religious conflicts that swept not just England but much of Europe during the 17th century. Not surprisingly, these became themes in much of his works, including the epic poems Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, which are considered not just his masterpieces but some of the greatest poems ever written.

About the Author:

John Milton was born in London on December 9, 1608, and studied at the University of Cambridge. He originally planned to become a clergyman, but abandoned those ambitions to become a poet. Political in his writings, he served a government post during the time of the Commonwealth. In 1651, he went completely blind but he continued to write, finishing Paradise Lost in 1667, and Paradise Regained in 1671. He died in 1674.
Christopher Ricks is professor of humanities at Boston University and most recently author of Dylan’s Visions of Sin.
Susanne Woods is a Provost nad Professor of English at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, and Chair of the professional Northeast Milton Seminar. Her doctorate is from Columbia University and she has taught at the University of Hawaii, Franklin & Marshall College, and at Brown University, where she maintains an affiliation. Her books include Natural Emphasis: English Versification from Chaucer to Dryden (1984), and Lanyer: A Renaissance Woman Poet (1999), and she has published numerous articles on Milton and other English renaissance poets.

Store Description

Founded in 1971 by Wayne Somers, a former college library bibliographer, Hammer Mountain Book Halls began as a catalogue business specializing in out-of-print scholarly books. We chose the name for euphony and because we occupied the second-highest point in the county, the top of a 1,200 foot hill. Since 1981, we've also operated "W. Somers, Bookseller," a retail book shop with a constantly changing general stock of books not listed on the Internet. It's open Monday-Friday, 1-5, and Saturday, 10-5; browsers are welcome. We've been members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of American since 1977. Since 1971 we have published a total of 45 paper catalogues, and we expect to continue issuing them in the fields of Continental European History, British History, French Literature, German Literature, and books recommended in the ALA's list of Books for College Libraries. Our catalogue stock is entirely fresh; we don't put it on the Internet until several months after mailing the catalogue. All books still available from our previous catalogues are listed on Advanced Book Exchange. If you would like to receive our next catalogues in one of these fields, let us know, being sure to specify your field of interest and include your postal address (we have no electronic catalogues). We're also the publisher and sole source of the invaluable "Bibliography Finder for American Authors," by Wayne Somers and Ilse Pinkus, which you can buy for a pittance through Advanced Book Exchange.
