Pen and ink on card, 150 x 120 mm (image), 270 x 205 mm (sheet); artist's monogram in the image lower right, captioned by the artist lower in the image 'Parakeet' [sic]; verso inscribed by the artist with the date: '11.1.41'; in fine condition, unmounted and unframed. Edwin W. Slater was born in England in 1875 and some time prior to World War One emigrated to Australia. He settled in Melbourne, where he had a career as advertising manager for Foy & Gibson. Slater was an accomplished amateur artist in watercolour, pen and ink, and pencil, who had a penchant for ornithological subjects. From a large archive of Slater's original drawings and watercolours. Douglas Stewart Fine Books sells rare books across all fields, but our strengths are in travel and exploration ? particularly of Australia and the Pacific ? and Australian art. In addition, we deal in all types of heritage material, including photographs, manuscripts, ephemera, maps and globes, and fine art.

We love meeting new people and welcoming visitors to our shop (open Monday to Saturday), but if you can't make it to Melbourne you can find probably find us at one of the major fairs in London, New York, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Toronto, San Francisco, Boston, Hong Kong or Sydney - all places we have exhibited in since 2009.
