Synopsis: This book is a tribute to Zinaida Hippius, one of the spiritual leaders of those Russian intellectuals who actively sought a way of realizing in life their visions of a new, sublimated human society. In the present volume an effort has been made to reveal Hippius's aesthetic, religious, and socio-political system of thought. The philosophy of this modern Hypatia, however antiquated in the existential world of today, still has the power to inspire the reader with visions of spiritual reality and all-embracing love and the foundation of the Third Humanity. Hippius's diaries are works of art, and have great historical and literary significance not only because they describe the views and attitudes of the poetess herself, but also because they re-create the spiritual atmosphere of St. Petersburg at the beginning of the twentieth century - with its emotional maximalism, metaphysical disposition, and religious aspirations. As the title indicates, "Between Paris and St. Petersburg: Selected Diaries of Zinaida Hippius" does not claim to contain all of the poet's diaries which were unpublished while she was still alive. Many were placed in various depositories in the West and in the Soviet Union, and some are privately owned. The diaries are here placed in chronological order.
