About this title

Synopsis:

Eighteen color and eight black and white photographs illustrate this 62 page book about the innovative photographer's, Eliot Porter (1901-1990), bird photography.

From the Publisher:

Captivated by birds from a young age, nature photographer Eliot Porter (1901-1990) created hundreds of photographic portraits of American bird species. He became a pioneer of color photography in order to more clearly differentiate species, focusing particularly on songbirds. Generally working with large-format cameras and short focal length lenses, he used innovative means, including huge tripods and scaffolds, and flash techniques to capture close-ups of birds around their nests. Balancing his efforts between scientific study and amateur appreciation, Porter, like the great bird artist John James Audubon, wanted to create the most alluring, animated portraits possible. However, he also sought to improve the standards of bird photography by showing how carefully composed, fully focused images could provide more pleasing, even compelling visions.
