About this Item

216 p. Dark rust cloth over boards, blind-stamped frame borders; gilt stylized spine titles and top / bottom design bar. Brown end papers, single side. Non-fiction: Sex education for the post U.S. Civil War crowd, and originating in France, the author being Laureate of the Academy of Medicine in Paris, France, where perhaps there was more candor and courage among doctors and publishers. Sadly, there are no pictoral illustrations. There are descriptions of diseases and their symptoms; some moralizing re: preservation of the species; cautions about libertinism and about conjugal onanism or artificial sex or birth control; and some physician observations fortunately now proven false. Passages about excessive masturbation by men or wedding night experiences by women, it seems, are no longer credited with causing epilepsy. Readers must bring a few grains of salt to this work given its 1873 publication date. However, research herein might add interest to writing historical romance novels. At back: 12 pages publisher ads: medical topics. Very good. No dust jacket. For age, near fine with slight blemishes: top edge darkening; rear lower corner has qtr-inch fray starting. Tight and bright. Clean. Bookseller Inventory # Alibris.76790002611

Store Description

Hi, Folks ... Mom said, 'I need to downsize'. Moving to assisted living, what she couldn't take included 8,000-plus books & records. A decade later, my upcountry barn is bursting. Books multiply as others recycle priorities. I now have 30,000 or more books (not yet all online) looking for good homes, and my learning curve has been a roller coaster. I celebrate word-crafters, thought-tumblers, laughter ... the arts of communication at every turn. I preserve, protect, and share. I am also Hedgehog Publishing, 'Words & Pictures by & for Folks with Prickly Backs, Soft Bellies, & Small Brains'.
