About this title:

Synopsis:

Written for pastoral counselors, chaplains and pastors: Issues surrounding Multiple Personality Disorder-- Dissociaitve Identity Disorder-- particularly with narratives of cultic ritual abuse, present unique challenges for providers of clincial pastoral care. The application of process theology, appreciation of a broad range of God ideation, awareness of child abuse and adolecent spirituality, and a biblical hermeneutic that includes object relation theroy and anthropology, are all areas to which pastoral care can assert primary claim. Issues surrounding "cultic ritual abuse" should be subject to pastoral consultation and approached with non-anxious skill and clarity. This latter will become increasingly important as these issues meet the scrutiny of popular media and anxious Christian groups with which dissociative persons may have contact.

About the Author: The Reverend Doctor Howard W. Whitaker is a priest of the Episcopal Church and Director of Clinical Pastoral Services, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is a graduate of Columbia Military Academy and The American University. He received his M.Div. from Episcopal Theological Seminary in Kentucky and his D.Min. from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC.

Dr. Whitaker is a Board Certified Chaplain of the Association of Mental Health Clergy and the Association of Professional Chaplains. He received his initial clinical training at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati and Lakeshore Mental Health Institute, Knoxville. He took his advanced and supervisory residencies at The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital, Baltimore.

Dr. Whitaker is the author of numerous articles, letters and reviews in professional publications. He is known as a clinician and researcher in religious issues and psychiatric illness, particularly related to trauma-based personality disorders. He has lectured across the United States on such topics as suicide; sacred creativity and manic depressive illness; mysticism and trauma; self-injurious behavior; and the intricacies of pastoral relationship with persons struggling with personality disorders.
