Description:

First edition of this compilation: The pastorals had previously been printed in the years specified, hence the statement "second edition" on title-page. The union of the two is useful for several purposes. Each prelate, in rebuking congregational rebellions in the early American Catholic Church, has much to say about Church/State relations, as well as about parochial discipline. The schismatics in both Philadelphia and Norfolk argued along what Carroll baldly called Lutheran and Calvinist lines that they had the right to choose their own pastors, and, moreover, that as Americans they would not be ruled on any front by the authority of a "foreign jurisdiction" (i.e., the pope). Both assertions are patiently canvassed and quite inflexibly rebutted by Carroll and Marechal. The "Note" on p. 4 gives a reason for this publication beyond the consolidation of important dogma and accounts of American Church history: "Copies of [Carroll's] valuable piece are extremely rare, and can be found only in private libraries of a few individuals. It is presented again to the public, with the full persuasion, that it will prove highly gratifying to the Catholicks of the United States, and particularly to those who had the happiness of being personally acquainted with its pious and celebrated author." Carroll, a native of Maryland, was the first Catholic bishop of the United States, later becoming the Catholic archbishop of Baltimore and thus the first Catholic archbishop in U.S. history. Marechal, born in France, was a theologian and professor of theology both in the U.S. and abroad, as well as a forceful Church executive when himself archbishop of Baltimore. Provenance: Released as a duplicate from the greatest collection of American Catholica in the world, the Georgetown University Library, with a few of the requisite and expected stamps; Marechal was at one time on the faculty at Georgetown. 8vo (23.3 cm; 9.25"). 85 pp. Parsons 640; Shoemaker 700. Modern plain grey wrappers. Uncut and mostly unopened. Ex-library, as above; with light foxing, age-toning and soil, leaves of last quarter creased across lower outer corner and final blank with that corner torn away. => An important work from these early archbishops of Baltimore.
