About this Item

Full page illustration on verso of top wrapper. Accompanied by oblong booklet entitled Ford V8 Motor, with 16 pages of transparencies (8 double-sided). Together the transparencies illustrate an automobile engine, with each transparency showing parts of the engine on both sides. The invention patented by Kroner "relates to a novel kind of pictorial representation or image sheet and a process for producing the same." As illustrated by the automobile engine in the accompanying booklet, Kroner has patented a process by which images can be placed on both sides of a transparent sheet, which, when layered, will provide the representation of the full object, but can be "dissected" when the layers are lifted.Prior to this date, it was not uncommon to see technological-related books with "flap-type" illustrations, in which each layer illustrated a part of the object (for example, airplanes, submarines, dynamos). These books with movable parts had their origin with anatomical fugitive sheets as early as the sixteenth century. It was not until Kroner patented his process, however, that images could be placed on both sides of a transparent sheet. The invention patented by Kroner "relates to a novel kind of pictorial representation or image sheet and a process for producing the same."
