This small but chunky book (984 pages) is descirbed as the first volume of a two-volume set inclusive of the years 1618 to 1859, but the patents recorded here go through 1853, so you will not feel shortchanged with this book, if what you are seeking is a detailed history of steam engine minutiae. The book is far from dry. It is written in narrative form. To choose a random example: "A.D. 1757: Keane Fitzgerald tried to accelerate the production of steam by injecting air from bellows into the boiling water. He did not observe the fallacy of the process until he had made an experiment on a grand scale. He contrived a method by ratchets and alternate wheels of converting a rectilineal into a circular movement." Sadly, the book is not illustrated, but references are provided to illustrations in contemporary books and journals. This book has been withdrawn from a library, where it did not circulate. It has been bound in dark green library buckram, which has preserved the text very well. The book was printed on high-quality paper which is only lightly toned. The authors (only one B. Woodcroft is credited, but there must have been more) have helpfully included an index of names. Fast shipping world wide.; Ex-library. Bookseller Inventory #
