About this Item

"First printing June, 1997." Inscribed & signed to the title page. Civil War history. Illustrated with B&W photos, the reproduction of which on this matte paper stock renders them sometimes a bit murky. Slavery was not their reason for volunteering, the author concludes: "Many had not even seen a real slave. The issue was just too far away. They braved shot and shell and even more deadly disease to defend their homes and the republican form of government they knew was far superior to any other in history." To what extent the seceding southerners threatened the homes or "republican form of government" of anyone in New York -- or how the war advanced self-determination or freedom from the dominance of bureaucratic tyrants in a distant imperial capital -- is not made clear. Reduced from $27. Bookseller Inventory # 003592
