About this Item

First edition. Original blindstamped dark brown, title stamped in gilt on spine. 247 pps. plus 4 pps. of ads. Rare early American quasi-medical work on patheism, which the author defines in the introductory explanation of terms as "the agency by which one person by manipulation, is enables to produce emotion, feeling, passion, or any physical or mental effects, in the system of another." . The subject toches on areas such as sleep-walking, sleep and dreams, clairvoyance, monomania, insanity, witchcraft "and various other mental or nervous phenomena". Though this is a tight copy and the spine gilt is bright, there is loss to the head and foot of the spine strip as well as separation along the front gutter. There is scattered foxing to the text block, more so to the first few and final few leaves. Some old pencil notations on the rear free endpaper. Bookseller Inventory # D8543
