About this Item

96 pp. 24mo. This is an explication of the game of Patience (akin to solitaire), with illustrative games. It was compiled and edited by Ednah Dow Cheney (1824Ð1904). Mrs. Cheney (as she oftened identified herself) was the first biographer of Louis May Alcott. Cheney, a friend of both the May and the Alcott families, was evicted from school as a child because "her influence was not helpful to discipline" (DAB). She became a teacher, reformer, abolitionist, suffragette and Transcendentalist. Cheney was a member of Margaret Fuller's conversation class and taught at Alcott's School of Philosophy. Her writings were quite varied, social games among them, as were her interests. This is a rare title, written with charm and humor. Owner's signature on front end paper. Inner hinge cracking at rear. Slight sunning of spine and front cover.Else, Very Good DAB. Purple publisher's cloth. Gilt decorations and titling on front cover and spine. T.e.g. Coated end papers. beveled boards.
