About this Item

Octavo. In three volumes. Vol. 1 xiv, 289 pages; Vol II xii, 300 pages; Vol. III xii, 354p. Indexes, Bibliographies, Scripture references. The Pauline Theology Group was formed in 1985 at the Society of Biblical Literature. They sought to be as thorough as possible in bringing the best in biblical and theological analysis of the Hauptbriefe (the first four epistles of Paul) though Philippians, the Thessalonia epistles and Philemon are dealt with. N.T. Wright makes a number of important contributions as does David Hay; Gordon Fee, James D.G. Dunn, E. Elizabeth Johnson, Robert Jewett, Douglas Moo and a host of scholars along the theological spectrum. It should be noted as Brendan Byrne, the great Jesuit biblical scholar writess: "none of the contributors speaks from the Roman Catholic tradition--an absence which may reflect not so much on ecumenical oversight but rather . Catholic comfort in areas of the NT other than the letters of Paul." In spite of the wonderful scholarship of Father Raymond Brown and Joseph Fitzmeyer, Paul's soteriological vision and its influence on the Reformed tradition has created this tension within Catholic theology. Certainly, the definiitve study of Pauline Theology including a wide range of scholars whose meticulous scholarship has allowed the serious scholar to understand the issues in both a study of text, historical background and the theological implications. All three volumes bound in blue, green or gray cloth lettered and decorated in silver or gilt. A fine set in fine dust jackets. Bookseller Inventory # 018945
