Folio, single leaf, printed ledger form completed in manuscript, with United States and Nevada revenue stamps affixed; docketed on verso. $2800.Original payroll ledger for the "Sherman Shaft" of the New York & Austin Silver Mining Company, dated July 31st, 1867, completed in manuscript with the names of the mine s employees along with their daily wages, signed for by each and with original revenue stamps affixed. In excellent condition Nevada and United States revenue stamps from this period are quite uncommon.Formed in 1866 by a group of New York businessmen, the New York and Austin Silver Mining Company had a successful ten-year run in the Reese River District of Nevada; the owners named Edwin A. Sherman, an experienced public official and newspaper editor, as superintendent of mining activities. This page from the payroll ledger gives ample evidence that the company, while recently formed, was a well-run business with tight controls and accountability brought about by a substantial capital investment and competent management. From the estate of the company s superintendent at the mine in Austin, Nevada, Edwin A. Sherman. Sherman (1829-1914), a native of Brocton, Massachusetts, worked for a series of newspapers before enlisting in the army during the Mexican-American War, where he assisted with the army newspaper American Flag. After the war he traveled to California in the Gold Rush, mining for a while before once again turning to writing and editing. After serving in a variety of local offices in California and Nevada during the 1850s and 60s, Sherman eaccepted the position of superintendent for the New York & Austin Silver Mining Company in 1866. He resigned in 1869 to take up a series of public offices in Nevada. He returned to San Francisco in 1877, spending his remaining years in the Bay area, contributing to local newspapers and magazines, especially on mining matters.Fold lines. Fine condition.
