About this Item

Five issues of 'The Peabody Volunteer', published four times a year by the students of the Peabody Demonstration School. Printed wrappers in various colors. Contents include news items, sports coverage, editorials, stories, poems, book reviews, advertising, etc. Some black-and-white photos and illustrations. These five issues, published 1944-1946, include writing by Bob Massie (Robert K. Massie, author/historian and winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Biography for 'Peter the Great: His Life and World'). He also is listed as a co-editor in three of the issues, and he appears in an article and a photo for history contest winners. Included in this lot are: 1.) May, 1944. Has a poem by Massie, 'The New Morn'. Also has a poem by his brother, Kim Massie. Some chipping and toning to wrappers; many names signed on rear wrapper. 2.) February, 1945. Has a full-page article, 'Peabody Students Win High Honors in History Contest'; it begins, 'Dan Calhoun, Bob Massie and Katheryne Keith won first, fourth, and eighth places, respectively, in the city-wide contest held recently on the Constitution, its meaning, and its applications.'. The facing page is a photo of the three contest winners looking studious with some books. There is also a nearly full-page piece in the Literary section by Massie, 'Last Night in the Solomons'. Also, there is a brief news item written by his brother, Kim Massie. The wrappers for this issue are detatched, but present. 3.) November, 1945. Includes sports coverage by Massie ('B.M.'), 'Peabody Turns Back Goodlettsville'. Some chipping/toning to wrappers, most of spine chipped away. 4.) December, 1945. Has an editorial by Massie ('B.M.'), 'Cordell Hull Wins Nobel Prize'. Former owner's name at top of front wrapper. 5.) February, 1946. Has a full-page autobiographical piece by Massie in the Literary section, 'The Paris Pike Preakness'. Pencilled notes and scribble on the wrappers. Bookseller Inventory # 007106
