Description:

Large octavo, and a heavy volume. Bound volume of the British magazine; issues bound without their separate original covers and advertising matter, as usual. An old rebind in a brown pebbled material with leather spine and corners. Some rub to spine edges. Noticeable foxing to endpapers and page edges, as usual. What is not usual is the fact that some previous owner took a straightedge and a blade and cut out and removed two illustrations from the article "The Making of Cricket Bats" on pp. 506 and 507, thus also removing text from pp. 505 and 508, the last being a page in the serial "Queen of the Jesters," by Max Pemberton. Although this does not impact any of the fiction by Wells, Kipling, or Doyle which give this volume its major interest, we must thus reduce the grade (to "fair") of a volume which could otherwise be labeled "very good," and the price by more than half. Contains Kipling's "Captains Courageous" Chapters III through X (that being the end); "The War of the Worlds," Chapters I through XI (which is NOT the end, note at end of Chapter XI states "To be continued in our July number"); and three high-seas pirate tales by Conan Doyle under the rubric "Tales of the High Seas." Again, vandalism to the article on cricket bats does not affect any of these tales by the three major authors. To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first appearance of "The War of the Worlds." All these tales superbly illustrated, "War of the Worlds" (famously) by Warwick Goble. Gilt titles to spine. Volume will close its own text block. 712 pp. including subject index at rear. Reduced from $245. Bookseller Inventory #
