About this Item

Exhibition catalogue. [36] p. 29 plates. Juried exhibition of 35 works by thirty-one American artists (primarily abstract expressionists) residing in France, selected from 340 entries. Introduction in French & English by Michel Tapié. The idea for the exhibition came about as the result of the cancellation an exhibition of American painting that was to have taken place at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts. The Committee for American Artists was formed with the sole objective of realizing an exhibition of American painting through the efforts of the artists themselves, with the paintings selected by a jury of five (Pierre Courthion, Charles Estienne, Jacques Lassaigne, Kenneth Sawyer and Michel Tapié). Artists include Norman Bluhm, Charles Boggs, Lawrence Calcagno, Norman Carton, Bernard Childs, Edward Clark, William N. Copley, Arthur Deshaies, Arthur Elias, Claire Falkenstein, Sam Francis, Léon Goldin, John Levee, Isadore Levy, George Morrison, Bernard Pfriem, Wallace Reiss and others. Very scarce; OCLC WorldCat (the online worldwide union catalogue of library holdings) locates only one copy in the collection of the University of Leeds. Bookseller Inventory # 013322
