Small 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering, dust jacket. 117pp. Illustrations. Fine/very good. Probable sole printing of a title likely printed in a very small print run given its hardcore genealogical subject. The author describes herself on the title page as "A great-great-granddaughter of Benjamin Fell and Historian of the Fell Association of Western Pennsylvania" -- but of greatest interest is this copy's ownership signature on the front flyleaf, a boldly penned "Adlai E. Stevenson / 1959" in black ink. Adlai E. Stevenson III (1900-65), Illinois governor, two-time Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., was the grandson of Jesse Fell (1808-87), important Bloomington, Illinois businessman, founder of Illinois State University and friend of Abraham Lincoln. Stevenson makes fun editorial corrections in pencil on pages 85-86, the most interesting of which is Craig's sentence "Good governor though he was, certain corrupt forces prevented his re-election." Stevenson boldly crosses out the second half of this sentence (after the comma) and draws an arrow to the blank lower margin, where he pencils "he could not run for re-election because he was drafted by the Democratic Convention to run for President." A couple of sentences later, after Craig notes "he lost to General Eisenhower," Stevenson again draws an arrow to the left margin, where he pencils "He was nominated again in 1956." On page 87, he crosses out a mistaken reference to a Fell marrying "Adlai E. Stevenson, Vice President of the United States," and notes in the lower margin "Lewis Green Stevenson, son of VP Adlai Ewing Stevenson." He also crosses out a reference to his own father being named "William Green Stevenson," substituting "Lewis" for "William." A unique copy of an uncommon title. Bookseller Inventory #
