Description:

1939 printing, bound in early 1920s half red morocco and marbled boards; binding is worn with rear board present but detached, and front board crudely reattached. Contents VG with woodcut frontispiece (and spare inserted copy on old paper, possibly also 1830s, of same frontispiece), woodcut on title page, 24 pp. An oddity. From wikipedia: William Wilson (ca. 1762 - October 1821) became a figure in the folklore of southeastern and south-central Pennsylvania in the late 18th century and early 19th century. He is often referred to as The Pennsylvania Hermit. His sister Elizabeth had been condemned for the murder of her children, although many believed her to be innocent of those charges. A pardon for Elizabeth was granted by the state and entrusted to William, but he was unable to deliver it in time to stop the execution. Following his sister's death, William withdrew from society, wandering westward across southeastern Pennsylvania and ultimately living his last 19 years in a cave near Hummelstown.
