About this Item

If you like to peer through doors back into another century, then you will enjoy browsing in this collection of magazines originally published in London in 1836-37 and reprinted in New York in 1845. The articles in these magazines are VERY eclectic. Some sample topics: the peasantry of the Alps, instruction of the blind, immoderate desires (????), Herefordshire customs, the plague at Eyam in Derbyshire, whale fishery in Iceland, etc. The book itself is in terrible condition. The front board is fully detached and the back board is holding on by a thread. The journals (published weekly) were printed on fairly good paper, pre-wood pulp, which has held up pretty well, with some browning and brittleness, but not much compared to what you find later in the century. I noted one page that was torn, but it seems to have been a fluke. The last few pages are damaged, but still legible. The issues begin with a date of Jan. 2nd, 1836 and go through to April of 1837. I haven't checked to see if all were included, but the book weighs more than three and a half pounds, so there's plenty there! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----; Oversize.
