About this title

Synopsis:

Offers advice on solving common gardening problems, recommends herbs, ground covers, flowers, and ornamental grasses, and includes tips on combining them

From Library Journal:

Jones's book is a primer of first rank and is especially important reading for the new property owner who has never gardened before or even confronted gardening tools. She patiently introduces questions of siting and planning, always with a thoughtful voice--like her reminders to leave a thicket for wildlife, or to choose natural pest controls instead of chemicals. She precisely outlines procedures and their importance; her chapters on propagation and winterizing the garden in particular are very thorough. Jones also includes lists of perennials, common weeds, and some good reference books in her appendix. McGourty's book is for both beginners and more experienced gardeners. He quickly moves from questions of soil and siting borders to discussing what plants to choose for those garden beds. Particularly valuable are his personal opinions--his defense of annuals and popular perennials and his recommendations on colors and forms of plant varieties that make the difference between successful and dreary or invasive additions to a border. Gardeners have much to learn from both authors, and their books are valuable additions to the field.
