From Booklist: This set in Gale's middle-school imprint is a handy biographical dictionary of performing artists of interest to teens. Each volume begins with an alphabetical list of entries in the set and lists individuals by type of performance: comedy, dance, film and television, and music (some names appear in more than one list). A readers' guide at the front of each volume explains the contents and format, but there is no explanation for the artists chosen or omitted. Each volume ends with an index to the set, which includes references to groups and organizations, titles of works, and other important names that appear in entries but are not entries themselves.
The entries are arranged alphabetically from Abdul, Paula to Winfrey, Oprah. Birth dates and places and death dates, where applicable, begin the three-to nine-page entries. Successes and failures are described with an emphasis on rebounding from adversity. Writing is easy to read, and information is current to early 1995. Each entry ends with a bibliography of popular sources.
