Title: Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant.
Publisher: Charles L. Webster & Company, New York
Publication Date: 1885
Edition: 1st Edition
Complete 2-volume set. Small 4to. Green cloth with gilt medallion, compartments, gilt rules and spine lettering. 584pp, 647pp. Frontispieces, illustrations (2 foldouts), decorative endpapers. Very good. Faintest of binding edgewear, the only flaw being a small ding at the center of the top edge of the front and rear boards (Volume II only), noticeable but inoffensive; modern ownership signature on front flyleaf of each volume. A tight and nice first edition of the famed autobiography, known as the "Shoulderstrap Edition" with giltstamping bold and strong. One of the greatest presidential memoirs ever, though it only goes up through the war's end. "Written frantically while in a race with death," notes Robert W. Johannsen, "these recollections rank with the best of the Civil War period." NEVINS II, 59. Bookseller Inventory # 38877
