Synopsis: This volume addresses the representation of European history in European cinema. Through a collection of nine case studies, it offers a European perspective on historical film narratives as well as on critical issues connected with studying film and history. In-depth analyses of several contemporary historical movies and classics from film history (e.g. Der Untergang, 2004), Vera Drake (2004), The Messenger (1999), Dawn (1928)) are complemented with solid theoretical exploration and an introduction by Robert Rosenstone. Thanks to its European focus, the originality of the analyses, and the selection of the case studies, the volume makes a fresh contribution to existing scholarship on film and history, which to date has concentrated mainly on American films and American history.

Contributors: Brett Bowles (Iowa State University), James Chapman (Open University), Bruno De Wever (Ghent University), Leen Engelen (Catholic University of Leuven), Karel Dibbets (University of Amsterdam), Willem Hesling (Catholic University of Leuven), Uli Jung (University of Trier), Benoît Mihaïl
(Free University of Brussels), Robert Rosenstone (California Institute of Technology), Amy Sargeant
(Birkbeck College), Jasmijn Van Gorp (University of Antwerp), Pascal Vandelanoitte and Roel Vande
Winkel (Ghent University).

About the Author: LEEN ENGELEN is a lecturer in film history, semiotics, and media theory at the Media & Design Academy (Catholic University College Limburg), researcher at the Faculty of Architecture and Arts at the Catholic University Leuven, and Secretary General of the International Association for Media and History. ROE VANDE WINKEL is Associate Professor at the University of Antwerp and at the University College LUCA School of Arts.
