Description:

The Most Significant Copy of Peter PanInscribed by J.M. Barrie to Mary HodgsonRACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator. BARRIE, J.M. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1906.First edition, first impression. A remarkable presentation copy inscribed on the half-title "To Mary Hodgson / with kindest regards / from J.M. Barrie / Jan 1907."Quarto (9 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches; 248 x 186 mm.). xii, 125, [126] pp. Tipped-in color frontispiece and forty-nine tipped-in color plates all mounted on heavy stock dark gray paper, each with a lettered tissue-guard.Publisher's russet cloth, front cover pictorially decorated in gilt, spine decoratively lettered in gilt. Heavy stock dark gray paper end-papers with map of Kensington Gardens. An unusually bright and fine copy with just a little light damp-staining to rear board. A few of the captioned tissue-guards a little creased. Protected by a pale blue cloth wrapper, spine lettered in manuscript, presumably made by Mary Hodgson. Housed in a fleece-lined quarter dark brown morocco clamshell case. This is an astonishing presentation copy of the first edition of "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens," inscribed by author J.M. Barrie to one of the principals in the "Peter Pan" creation story.James M. Barrie, who scarcely signed books, presented this copy to Mary Hodgson (1876-1962), nurse-nanny to the Llewelyn Davies "lost boys" who inspired his classic and to whom he dedicated the book. This copy possesses the strongest author association of any that have yet to (or will likely ever) surface in the marketplace. It snaps the head back. This deeply satisfying example of the book - illustrated by Arthur Rackham to critical acclaim - is a collector's dream and as close to a Dedication copy as can be.One day in1897, novelist and playwright James M. Barrie was walking his dog in London's Kensington Gardens when he encountered two young boys, George and Jack Llewelyn Davies, and their baby brother, Peter (in pram), strolling through the park with their nanny, Mary Hodgson. Barrie, who yearned for the happy days of his childhood and had a pronounced childlike quality to his personality, was captivated by the boys' appearance and spirit. Thereafter, Barrie (in a childless marriage) regularly accompanied them and Mary Hodgson through Kensington Gardens, charming the brothers (whose number would grow to five) with stories of fairies and pirates, and leading them on fantasy-play adventures in the park. He assumed a highly active and avuncular role in their lives while developing a close relationship with their parents, or at least with their mother, Sylvia. Arthur Llewellyn Davies thought Barrie's attention to the children odd and the author's almost daily visits to their home a bit much. He was at once pleased and pained to read Barrie's dedication in the book: "To Sylvia and Arthur Llewelyn Davies and Their Boys (My Boys)."Thirteen years later, in 1910, after Sylvia (daughter of novelist George Du Maurier), died (Arthur had passed in 1907), Barrie (who had provided financial assistance to the Llewelyn Davies family during the intervening years) and Hodgson shared guardianship of the children, she as caretaker, he as trustee, per Sylvia's will. The relationship between Barrie and Hodgson was complex and often strained from the very beginning. Hodgson considered Barrie to be her archrival in matters concerning the boys. They were both highly possessive of the children and held distinctively different views about how they should be raised. He exulted in their liveliness and mischievous behavior; she was appalled by his permissiveness and felt that he undermined her authority. She saw him as intrusive. Barrie was not unaware of her hostility and dealt with it in his own way. In "Peter Pan," he assigned Hodgson's role as the boys' nanny to Nana, the dog.Barrie had earlier written a character sketch of Hodgson in the book that introduced Peter Pan and the Lost Boys to the world. "The Little White Bird" was publi. Bookseller Inventory #
