Quarto. 25, pp (Text), leaves (Plates), pp. Original printed wrappers. Front free endpaper inscribed and signed by Renée Odic-Kintzel to Odette de Marsangy.Artist of remarkable all-round ability, Odile Odic-Kintzel (1890-1969) began her career by studying music to advanced level at the Schola Cantorum, where she was a pupil of Vincent d'Indy and Blanche Selva amongst others. Later, she discovered dance, adopting an autodidactic approach at first, and devoting herself finally to this art in which she saw the source of and solution to many of her questions about music, art and human nature. Her aesthetic and pedagogical research was characterized by a genuine spirituality. Like the majority of free dancers of her time, she dedicated herself to the cult of nature, and preached harmony and grace in a way that transcended the sentimentality and affection typical of that period. Odile Odic-Kintzel referred to her dance as 'redemptory dance.' Her work was admired and supported by many of the foremost artists and intellectuals, and she benefitted from the collaboration of composers such as Florent Schmidt, Albert Roussel and Arthur Honegger. In her "Ce Que Peut la Danse," the author presents a collection of poetic and philosophical writings of her own composition on the power of dance. Includes four captioned photogravures at rear showing various dance positions.Minor and sporadic foxing/staining to covers. Text in French.
