About this Item

8vo. 2 volumes. Volume I. pp. xliii, 504, [24p. catalogue]. Volume II. pp. iv, 588. With frontispiece plate depicting Joan of Arc visited by the Bishop of Beauvais after her condemnation. Re-backed/re-hung in original blind-stamped publisher’s cloth boards, preserving the original spines. Binding is solid but shows rubbing and wear to the extremities. Interior pages reveal occasional mild scattered foxing. Pages vi-vii in the preface to volume I contain minor marginalia in an old hand (several small markings). The frontispiece (volume I) is mildly damp stained; the title page opposite displays some toning and offsetting. The bottom margin corner of p. 89 (vol. II) is chipped. Inner hinges to both volumes are neatly strengthened. Includes chapters on "epidemic disorders of the mind", "the sorcery of ancient times and its relations to modern witchcraft", "dreams and visions – Swedenborg and his revelations", "St. Teresa, her visions and revelations", "the Inquisition in various countries", "opinions of Catholic and Protestant Churches on the subject of sorcery", "the revived sorcery of Paganism", "the Flagellation mania", "on malefic spirits." Volume II devotes 7 chapters to Joan of Arc. Other chapters discuss "epidemic monomania and demonopathy in several convents" – i.e. Loudun and Louviers. "Theomania" and convulsive behavior in Protestant communities is also discussed. [Crabtree 779]. Bookseller Inventory # 000946
