First photoplay edition, illustrated with scenes from the Universal silent film starring Lon Chaney in the title role, Mary Philbin as Christine Daae and Norman Kerry as Raoul. Addtional color illustraions by Andre Castaigne. Hardcover in red cloth lettered in black. 357 pp. plus publisher's ads at rear. Front gutter and top and bottom of the spine strip frayed and with repair to the hinges; old presentation notation front free endpaper. In the very scarce original color illustrated dust jacket depicting the masked ball scene, 1" chip from the head of the spine and smaller chip foot of spine and some edge and folds wear (non-reproducable scan available). The classic horror story of a deformed madman who lives in the deep cellars of the Paris Opera House and falls in love with with a young singer who he trains to become a prima donna. Lon Chaney's creation of The Phantom stands as one of the immortal monsters of the silver screen. Basis for the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical that has run for over a quarter century.
