Contains the photograph frontispiece of "The Pheneas Circle," Arthur Conan Doyle and his family. HAMLIN GARLAND'S COPY WITH HIS BOOKPLATE. Garland was a prolific writer publishing novels, short fiction and essays. His successful 1917 autobiography, A Son of the Middle Border, prompted a sequel, A Daughter of the Middle Border, which won the 1922 Pulitzer Prize. Garland devoted his last years to investigating psychic phenomenon. His final book, The Mystery of the Buried Crosses (1939) tried to prove the legitimacy of psychic mediums. Laid in is a TLS regarding this copy dated 1941 from John G. Moore who obtained much of Hamlin Garland's personal library from his daughter, with the rest going to the Libraray of Congress.
