Description:

8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. 360pp. Top edge gilt. Numerous illustrations, line drawings, foldout map tipped to rear pastedown. Good plus. Binding rather edgeworn, and mild dampstaining to page edges. Tight, decent first edition of this thick survey of every Philadelphia unit that served in the Civil War. A choice presentation copy, boldly inscribed in black ink on the front flyleaf: "Presented to J.A. Kepner, / By J.P. Nicholson, who was / a dear friend." NICHOLSON (1843-1922) -- who appears in this book several times -- began as a quartermaster with the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry, rising through the ranks to lieutenant colonel; he took part in Sherman's march to the sea and was present at Lee's surrender, and translated and edited the Comte de Paris' Civil War history; he served as director of the War Library of the Loyal Legion of the United States, and in 1885 was named Recorder in Chief of the Loyal Legion, filling that post for many years; he was also chairman of the Gettysburg National Park Commission; in 1914 the massive "Catalogue of Library of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel John Page Nicholson. Relating to the War of the Rebellion 1861-1866" was published. Internally a nice copy, despite occasional light dampstaining. NEVINS I, 166. Bookseller Inventory # 33889
