8vo, pp. 584. A very nice copy. The sister of Robert Gould Shaw, the Colonel of the famous Civil War black regiment, Josephine Shaw married Charles Russell Lowell, the poet's nephew. Her family belonged to Theodore Parker's congregation and took an interest in the Brook Farm community. Radical abolitionist, and widow at 20, Lowell, devoted herself to "Negro relief work." She was a fundraiser and organizer in education, prison reform. She was the first woman appointed to the (NY) State Board of Charities, and "was one of the most influential persons in the charity movement of her generation."[NAW]. Bookseller Inventory # 11988
